Biometric Devices: Using Your Mind To Control The Screen

Scanning of a human brain by X-rays

Last year at the Game Developers Conference we got to see quite a few cool new gadgets, many of which had to do with some sort of eye tracking or head tracking. We very quickly stopped by the booth of Neurosky, a company in San Francisco, who is creating new ways of game play with the help of the EEG.Electroencephalograph, or EEG, has been used in hospitals now for decades to detect brainwaves. An EEG can monitor the alpha waves that generally respond to relaxation, or the beta waves that indicate … [Read more...]

Biometric Devices: Criticism Growing Against Scans in Airports

3d body scan

According to a recent article published in USA Today, New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports will be newly equipped with full-body imaging scanners in the coming months. The “virtual strip searches,” as some fliers are calling it, use E-rays or electromagnetic waves to detect weapons on 3-D images of passengers’ naked bodies. We’ve discussed body scanning technologies in past posts on Eye Tracking Update, as we occasionally cover topics like biometrics, but new reports are causing a stir … [Read more...]

Motion Tracking: Waving Goodbye to the Past

Motion Tracking

Sci-Fi fans should remember the scenes from Minority Report, where Tom Cruise stood in front of a futuristic computer, moving files around with only his hands. The ease and speed with which he navigated through the interface for the files he sought seemed faster than your standard mouse clicks. This scene and others like it serve as the inspiration for the Armchair Interface. This new and exciting technology utilizes web cameras to translate gestures and hand movements into mouse control, providing … [Read more...]

Eye Tracking and Speed Dating: Love At First Glance

Every now and again, we here at Eye Tracking Update come across a funny article that describes eye tracking in a more humorous light. With so many studies being done, it’s not surprising that some are more entertaining than others, and it’s always fun to see eye tracking and head tracking technology used more creatively, as opposed to, say, the typical studies focusing on web and design usability or driver safety, to name a few. As we know, science is ultimately an experimental process and helps … [Read more...]

Eye Tracking in New Interfaces

The word “interface” is a loaded one. It’s such a malleable word, and with regular, cutting edge progression in the tech worlds, we see it’s many uses popping up more and more.
