Improving Public Transit Safety With Eye Tracking
There have been many news reports of drivers, especially drivers of public transportation vehicles, not paying attention while driving because they are distracted by their cell phones. In the most serious cases, the drivers have caused accidents endangering the lives of their passengers as well as the passengers of the other vehicles. Drivers are especially distracted by driving and texting at the same time. States have already enacted laws making it illegal to talk on cell phones unless using a hands-free device. Texting while driving is even more dangerous than verbal cell phone conversations because reading and writing text messages requires full visual attention; the same attention required to avoid an accident.
