Face Tracking Makes Glasses-Free 3D a Reality
Eye tracking could be the solution to eliminating the need for those goofy glasses required to watch a movie in 3D. Although the technology isn’t quite there yet, we may be seeing something close with a new technique just released by Toshiba. Their newest product is the first ever glasses-free 3D laptop, which is set to revolutionize the 3D viewing experience.
The Qosmio F755, with a 15.6 in HD TruBrite display, uses Active Lens technology to create the 3D effect, a then uses the laptop’s built-in webcam and face tracking to make the 3D effect more responsive to the user’s viewing angle. The face tracking allows the system to react to the motion and position of the viewer to create a broader viewing zone. The biggest limitations of this technology are that it’s face tracking, not eye tracking, and that it’s only capable of adjusting the image to the motions and position of one user. Eye tracking would make this even more effective because the system would adjust to exactly where you were looking on the screen and not just how your face is positioned. Plus, how can you share when only one person can watch at a time?
This laptop does allow you to switch back and forth between 2D and 3D and can even let you run them simultaneously on one screen. I think glasses free is definitely a step in the right direction for 3D technology, however, I would like to see it employed for multiple users and on larger screens. I don’t know how big the demand will be for laptops that play 3D movies, especially with a $1,700 price tag. The gaming application of this technology, however, may be a different story, and apparently Toshiba is already working with NVidia to have 3D gaming available by November.
