Iris scanners to speed up airport security

Iris scanners to speed up airport securityAs the holidays approach, many of you will be traveling to visit family or to go somewhere warm. Unless you are traveling by car, this means having to endure the dreaded airport security lines. The good news is, biometric security technologies are in development which will help speed up security procedures; the bad news is that they won’t be deployed, at least in the U.S., in time for this season’s rush. It looks like the UK and the Middle East will be the first to give iris recognition a shot in hopes to streamline the check-in process.

Biometric technology developer, AOptix, has launched their InSight iris recognition system at a handful of security checkpoints, including London’s Gatwick airport and the boarders of Qatar. The system captures high quality images of the eye from up to 2 meters away, and matches the unique iris pattern of the passenger to iris data stored in a database to verify identity.

Implementing this technology was part of a £45 million investment in Gatwick’s South Terminal aimed at redeveloping the security search area to alleviate security congestion. The goal is to get passengers through security in less than 5 minutes. With the new AOptix scanners, 5,000 passengers are processed per hour, which is a 25% increase in efficiency.

This technology is just one of the many that are being developed as biometrics soar to the forefront of security technology. Stay tuned for more biometric technologies coming to an airport near you, and if you happen to come across one of these systems during your travels, please tell us about it!
