Smart devices getting smarter with eye tracking

Smart devices getting smarter with eye trackingDo you ever wonder how much more advanced technology will get? We have smart phones, smart tablets, and even smart TVs.   It seems like today, we are surrounded by so many “smart” devices that it’s hard to imagine how much smarter technology will be 5 or 10 years from now. Well, Canadian eye tracking company Mirametrix is hedging its bets that smart display screens will be the technology of the future.

According to Mirametrix founder and CTO, Dr. Craig Hannessey, “the interactive display market is forecasted to surpass $900 billion by 2016.” Mirametrix is announcing its newest product, a long range eye tracker that can be integrated with a large TV display to create a natural user interaction experience. The system uses gesture commands, speech recognition, and eye tracking to allow the user to engage with the display. The user can control the intelligent user interface using their eyes, hand movements, and voice commands. In addition to the hardware component, Mirametrix has also created interactive advertisement displays and content suggestion engines as part of their analytics suite, which tracks the user’s gaze behavior and indicates preferences and state of mind.

I am predicting that the future will bring increasingly more advanced display screens that regularly incorporate the types of user behavior-sensitive features which Mirametrix is venturing into now. Someday the technology we call “smart” today will be feeble by comparison.
