The All-In-One AOptix Face and Iris Recognition System

The All In One AOptix Face and Iris Recognition SystemThirdfactor.com posted a video last month featuring an interview with Joey Pritkin, Product Manager at AOptix Technologies, speaking about their new InSight iris scanning system. Speaking at the Biometric Consortium Conference, Pritkin demonstrated that the company’s InSight system is able to capture an ISO-standard face biometric while simultaneously recording iris information.

AOptix Technologies’ system can scan from 2 meters away, as long as the subject remains still. Stationary scans make for more accurate information capture overall anyway. The company has joined forces with another biometric group called Aware, and the two are offering a system that kills two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Pritkin describes the combined system as a solution to multi-biometric capture that offers fast and seamless integration between the two for use in enrollment processes and/or border security. It’s better to have two separate approaches to handle outlier conditions, so they decided to provide the ability for multiple biometric scans at one time.

In the video, Pritkin demonstrates how quickly the system works, standing at a mark on the ground, looking into the screen and waiting for it to locate his face and scan. This entire process takes only a few seconds, scanning the first eye, then the second, and lastly the face. After capture, the system takes advantage of Aware’s universal client software, which works with a clean layout and single click process. It’s nice for usability, he points out, but also suggests that it’s good to use in an automated environment.

The system captures the face and then auto crops and centers the image. Pritkin says Aware is ideal as it’s highly configurable and very customizable, making it easy to work with and alter the layout to best suit one’s needs. At a two meter distance, the system doesn’t fisheye, creating an image free of distortion – this makes for better accuracy later on, when analyzing data.

Pritkin says the system is still a prototype and was created in part to DOD specifications for biographic enrollment. It is possible to add fingerprint modules or signature enrollment for other biometric options for data collection.
