Tobii Announces a Faster, Better Eye Tracker
Tobii Technology gets a lot of play both here and around the web. They’re one of the more established eye tracking businesses in the industry and have worked with many websites for usability purposes.
In a recent article at Bradenton.com, Tobii is reported as having launched a 300 Hz eye tracker that should give users free movement. It’s been dubbed the TX300 and Tobii is hoping it can help scientists and researchers equip subjects with the powerful device to monitor saccades, micro saccades, and fixations at 300 hertz while making it possible for the subject to maneuver their head more freely and naturally.
When Tobii announces a new product, it’s sort of a big deal, as they’re one of the more influential companies in the industry. Bradenton.com says it’s one of the first higher-frequency eye tracking systems that allow such head movement, and will hopefully result in more realistic testing overall. Of course, researchers are after natural behavior, and many devices are intrusive or alter how a user might react or interact with a system on their own, free from an eye tracker.
There’s a lab at the University of Kent in England that’s been using the TX300 with good reviews, studying language processing, attention, and bias in subjects. The new system was designed exactly for research like this, where higher data frequency is necessary. While eye trackers can be tolerant of some head movements, it’s certainly a breath of fresh air to know that more precise systems are being developed. The applications, as you can imagine, should be extremely useful in neuroscience, psychology studies, developmental psych and psycholinguistics. Higher precision should make for more accurate data capture when it comes to reading studies, studying babies and children as well as ophthalmological and oculometric study.
Before the new device, there was a ceiling as to what extend you could manipulate and alter research accordingly to suit your needs as specific to any one project. Tobii hopes the new technology can give scientists a more effective tool for behavioral research, the study of eye movements, and then the point at which these two industries crossover.
