Microsoft patents eye tracking augmented reality glasses
The rumors were true! Last year there was buzz around whether or not Microsoft was making its augmented reality glasses, and now a patent has recently surfaced. Microsoft has applied for a patent on augmented reality glasses for an enhanced and immersive gaming experience fully integrated with eye tracking applications, facial recognition and more.
The patent describes “a system and related methods for inviting a potential player to participate in a multiplayer game via a user head-mounted display device” which will use and attain information from eye tracking, facial recognition, depth perception, and voice commands. Users will be able to engage with one another in a game by using the eye tracking technology or one of the other listed methods above to invite another user to a game.
Even though the patent has finally surfaced, the rumors won’t be stopping any time soon. Now there will be plenty of talk of what applications and hardware the glasses will integrate. The HMD is already rumored by many to include extra microphones, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a compass, and an orientation sensor. Gamers are also wondering if the glasses will be a stand-alone device, given that it has many of the features the Kinect already has, or if it will be used in addition to the Kinect for a more immersive gaming experience.
The glasses are purposed for multiple player gaming and images from the patent show very simple and unobtrusive glasses, very similar to a pair of normal glasses. As of now it is unclear if the lenses of the glasses will be clear or slightly tinted, which would make it more similar to the Oculus Rift.
